David and Susan Bane have operated a small farm in the Sidney area for 23 years, and have 5 children – Joshua, Patty, Paul, Joey and Molly. The Bane Family are members of Slow Food USA (www.slowfoodusa.org). David Bane grew up on a diversified livestock and grain farm in central Illinois, obtained a B.S. in Agricultural Science and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in Large Animal Clinical Sciences from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. He has been a private veterinary practitioner, a faculty member at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, and an animal health researcher. David has his own food animal research and consulting business, maintains part ownership in a livestock business with his brothers on the farm where he grew up, and oversees Bane Family Meats livestock and poultry production and marketing. David is interested in natural and sustainable food animal production, and in 2007 coordinated the first annual Boundary Waters Veterinary Conference: Food Animal Production without Antibiotics (www.bwcaw-vetconf.com) in Ely, MN. Susan Bane grew up in north central Illinois, obtained a B.S. in Recreational Therapy from the University of Illinois, and a second B.S. in Occupational Therapy from the University of Minnesota. Susan has her own occupational therapy consulting business and focuses on early childhood development. She has coordinated 6 annual conferences for therapists in the Midwest as a partner in Therapeutic Enrichments. Susan is Chief Financial Officer for Bane Family Meats. Joshua and Patty Bane are the 2 oldest children of Susan and David. Joshua is beginning his second tour of duty with the U.S. military and is stationed in eastern Kentucky. Patty is completing her degree in early childhood education at Illinois State University. Josh and Patty were both active in 4-H as they grew up, and began Bane Family Meats with their lamb projects in the 1990’s. They enjoyed working with livestock on the farm as they grew up, and both assist in the marketing of Bane Family Meats products as their schedules allow. Paul Bane is completing his second year at Parkland College majoring in kinesiology. Paul has been active in 4-H and was responsible for introducing free range chickens and Heritage Turkeys to Bane Family Meats in 2000. In 2004, Paul was a Heritage Turkey delegate to Terra Madre, the first international conference of Slow Food members, held in Turin, Italy. He loves to cook and frequently prepares delicious recipes for family, school and community events. Paul enjoys showing his livestock, and has won several prizes for sheep showmanship at local and the Illinois State Fair competitions. Paul assists in the livestock production and marketing of Bane Family Meats products as his schedule allows. Joey Bane enjoys his studies and football at Unity High School in Tolono, IL. Joey is active in 4-H with his poultry and sheep projects, and was responsible for the addition of beef products to Bane Family Meats in 2001. In 2004, Joey was a Heritage Turkey delegate to Terra Madre, the first international conference of Slow Food members, held in Turin, Italy. Joey assists in the livestock production and marketing of Bane Family Meats products as his schedule allows. Molly Bane is the youngest member of our family. She enjoys her studies, basketball and cheerleading at Unity Junior High School in Tolono, IL. Molly is active in 4-H with her pig and lamb projects, and was responsible for the addition of pork products to Bane Family Meats in 2006. In 2004, Molly was a Heritage Turkey delegate to Terra Madre, the first international conference of Slow Food members, held in Turin, Italy.
